hello… anyone out there?

Today as I bring my blog back on-line, I am reminded of an event in Paul’s life.

Shortly after Saul’s (Paul’s) conversion, we learn in Galatians 1:11-18 that he spent three years learning about Jesus. He didn’t learn about Jesus through Seminary or any similar teachers, but through a revelation directly from Jesus Christ.

I want you to know, brothers and sisters, that the gospel I preached is not of human origin.  I did not receive it from any man, nor was I taught it; rather, I received it by revelation from Jesus Christ.- Galatians 1:11-12

Paul makes reference here to the fact that he is indeed preaching not just “religion” but truth – a truth taught by God: Jesus Christ personally. The last four years I have spent studying Scripture. During that time I spent many nights reading books by experts. However, despite what I have been “taught” from professors and other classmates, the single truth remains in the Bible given by God.

God is love!

As we study the Bible, we find many commandments: from loving God to loving our neighbor – from not committing murder to obeying our parents. Each of these commandments are great and useful as guidelines for life. However, most of them truly don’t mean much by themselves. Scripture as a whole must be weaved together to fully understand what God is trying to tell us.

God is love. God created our planet. He created the environment…, the animals, and us. He also sent His Son to earth to be a living sacrifice for us. Jesus then died for us, because he loves us. As a way to forgive our sins, He did on the cross for us. As a way to fulfill the prophecy, He was buried, and three days later rose from the grave to live again. As a way to speak with God, Jesus is now our intercessor in prayer.

God gave us His Word (the Bible) in order that we may know of Him and come to Him. However, it isn’t merely enough that God loves us and that Jesus died for us. We must come to Him, accept Him as our Lord and Savior and obediently follow His ways. This is where the “love thy neighbor” comes in. Jesus tells us that when you do the least of these to others in love, then you do it upon Jesus (Matthew 25:40).

The best way to be obedient to God is to study the Scripture. You don’t have to go to Seminary or pay for a college degree in Biblical studies. We do, however, have to study the Word of God. After all, it is the instruction manual to life.

Because God is love, He gave His Son. The rest is up to us. Will you accept His gift of Heaven and eternal life? If you need more help understanding what this means, please go to……  http://whativaluemost.com/Gospel_main.aspx

Proverb to live by #4

“The fear of the Lord leads to life, and whoever has it rests satisfied; he will not be visited by harm.” – Proverbs 19:23

Last time I explained in a similar proverb that “fear” doesn’t mean to be afraid of, or scared of God. I mentioned that “A healthy fear where we can maintain respect and reverence will help us….” It can help us rest peacefully.

Take time today to pray. Pray and thank God for being your Lord and Savior. Pray thanking Him for the many unseen blessings of protection that He affords you everyday.

Remember also that the “Fear of the Lord leads to life,” which may also be explaining that when we trust in the Lord, we will have everlasting life with God in Heaven. Not everything on earth may be as we desire, “safe in all things” – but… our spiritual life will not be harmed when we trust in God.

Proverb to live by #3

“The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge.” – Proverbs 1:7

I used to not understand that passage. Why should we “fear” the Lord? Isn’t He supposed to be a loving God? Why would He do anything to hurt us? How can I worship a God that I am supposed to fear?

So, how do we understand what it means? Well, first of all, I have always been an advocate of asking “do we really know what the original text said?” Think about it – our English language is not identical in word for word translation from Hebrew or Greek. A good example you probably know is the Greek word “agape” which we translate as “love.”

How many of us “love” pizza? We “love” our family. We “love” _(fill in the blank)_. Our English language has progessed to use one word “love” in a variety of meanings/applications. However, “agape,” as best as we can translate more accurately means “to love sacrificially” as God did when He sacrificed His Son to die on a cross for us. We don’t “love” pizza – we may enjoy eating it. We may like it, but it’s not self-sacrificing. How many other words have changed over the years? ”Surfing” used to be something you could only do on water – now you can do it on the internet from the comfort of your home. A “paddle” used to be a disciplinary tool in every school, now it’s just for use in boats. I digress….

As I return to the Hebrew translation of the Old Testament, I look at “yirah” the word that many translate “fear” in the Bible. Other translations for the word include “respect” or even “reverance.” I believe both of these aditional definitions help to describe what we are to due in order to gain wisdom.

We should respect God for who He is, what He has done, and what He will do. We should be reverent to Him, for He is Holy, Almighty, and the Lord of all. We should also have some aspect of fear of God; I don’t mean we should be “scared,” but we should fear His judgement on sin, unbelievers, and disobedience. A healthy fear where we can maintain respect and reverence will help us begin to have knowledge of Him.

“The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge.” – Proverbs 1:7

Proverbs to live by – 2

Hmmm… As I go through my “Proverbs to live by,” the second one is “Avoiding a fight is a mark of honor; only fools insist on quarreling.” – Proverbs 20:3

I wonder – is my wife trying to tell me something?  :-)   Just kidding. The package was unopened when she gave it to me. However, I do not believe in coincidences. Marvin mentioned on Sunday during church that it is so neat how a Sunday School lesson prepared months in advance can speak to us today. The Bible is the same way. What was written over 2,000 years ago, can have a stunning effect on us today if we take time to read and study it.

Our devotional time is not just a haphazard mix of verses that don’t apply. In fact, if and when we take the time to pray and study the Bible, we discover that there is something of value in every verse. Whether the writer is providing background details to establish the context of the message, or the message itself, it is still important for us to know and use in our daily lives.

Today as you think through “what does this mean to me” or “how can this be used in my life,” consider all the avenues. Is it meant for school, home, work, or just those times out in public? I don’t know where it may help you, but chances are it will be different than mine. But in the end, it will still be useful to remember:

Avoiding a fight is a mark of honor; only fools insist on quarreling.” – Proverbs 20:3

what perfect timing

Yesterday our preacher mentioned an editorial article in the Crimson White. It was a totally useless article, one of wasted time in writing and publishing, much less reading. However, it had some great points (lessons on how NOT to live). However, it brings me to a more useful editorial article:

Why  Go To Church?
A  Church goer wrote  a letter to the  editor of a  newspaper and complained that it made no sense  to go to church every Sunday.  “I’ve gone for 30 years now,” he wrote, “and in  that time I have heard something like 3,000  sermons.  But for the life of me, I can’t  remember a single one of them..  So, I  think I’m wasting my time and the pastors are  wasting theirs by giving sermons at  all.”

This  started a real controversy in the “Letters to  the Editor” column, much to the delight of the  editor.  It went on for weeks until someone wrote this clincher:

“I’ve  been married for 30 years now.  In that  time my  wife has cooked some 32,000 meals.   But, for the life of me, I cannot recall the  entire menu for a single one of those  meals.  But I do know this.. They all nourished me and gave me the strength I needed  to do my work.  If my wife had not given me  these meals, I would be physically dead  today.

Likewise, if I had not gone to  church for nourishment, I would be spiritually  dead today!”  When you are DOWN to  nothing….. God is UP to something!  Faith  sees the invisible, believes the incredible and receives the impossible!  Thank God for our  physical AND our spiritual nourishment!

Next time you decide to skip out on church . . . think . . . do I really want to miss another meal?

When  Satan is knocking at your  door,  simply  say,
“Jesus,  could you get that for  me?”

Are you in “denial?”

Lately, I have seen some reason for concern. Jesus said:

Then he called the crowd to him along with his disciples and said: “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me. – Mark 8:34

Are you in denial? re you denying yourself? Or are you denying God? Jesus told us that no servant can have two masters – we must either be serving God or ourselves.

what would YOU do?

His name is Tim. He has wild hair, wears a T-shirt with holes in it, jeans, and no shoes. This was literally his wardrobe for his entire four years of college.

He is brilliant. Kind of profound and very, very bright. He became a Christian while attending college.

Across the street from the campus is a well-dressed, very conservative church. They want to develop a ministry to the students but are not sure how to go about it.

One day Tim decides to go there. He walks in with no shoes, jeans, his T-shirt, and wild hair. The service has already started and so Tim starts down the aisle looking for a seat.

The church is completely packed and he can’t find a seat. By now, people are really looking a bit uncomfortable,  but no one says anything. Tim gets closer and closer and closer to the pulpit, and when he realizes there are no seats, he just squats down right on the carpet.

By now the people are really uptight, and the tension in the air is thick.

About this time, the minister realizes that from way at the back of the church, a deacon is slowly making his way toward Tim.

Now the deacon is in his eighties, has silver-gray hair, and a three-piece suit. A godly man, very elegant, very dignified, very courtly. He walks with a cane and, as he starts walking toward this boy, everyone is saying to themselves that you can’t blame him for what he’s going to do.

How can you expect a man of his age and of his background to understand some college kid on the floor?

It takes a long time for the man to reach the boy.

The church is utterly silent except for the clicking of the man’s cane. All eyes are focused on him. You can’t even hear anyone breathing.  The minister can’t even preach the sermon until the deacon does what he has to do.

And now they see this elderly man drop his cane on the floor. With great difficulty, he lowers himself and sits down next to Tim and worships with him so he won’t be alone.

Everyone chokes up with emotion…

When the minister gains control, he says, ‘What I’m about to preach, you will never remember. What you have just seen, you will never forget.’

‘Be careful how you live.
You may be the only Bible some people will ever read!’

GOOD news for those seeking the Lord!

Many times I truly wonder: am I really following God? Am I doing what HE wants me to do? What’s next? Where does He want me to go? What does He want me to do? How does He want me to do it? For some reason, I rarely get “direct” answers to these questions. However, I do know one thing:

“For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the LORD, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. Then you will call on me and come and pray to me, and I will listen to you. You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart.” – Jeremiah 29:11-13

While I’m not getting “direct” answers, I do often get affirmed in the actions I take. The Lord DOES answer you. But we must be listening to hear Him. He will bless you greatly when you follow His ways.

Unfortunately, the inverse is also true. If you are not following in the Lord’s Will, then possibly you are one described here…

13 …“These people say they are mine.
They honor me with their lips,
but their hearts are far from me.
   And their worship of me
is nothing but man-made rules learned by rote.
14 Because of this, I will once again astound these hypocrites with amazing wonders.
The wisdom of the wise will pass away,
and the intelligence of the intelligent will disappear.”

15 What sorrow awaits those who try to hide their plans from the Lord, who do their evil deeds in the dark!
“The Lord can’t see us,” they say. “He doesn’t know what’s going on!”
16 How foolish can you be? – Isaiah 29

I hope you’re not one of these.  If you are, REPENT, and turn away from wickedness and allow God to guide you back to His Kingdom.

27 Turn from evil and do good;
then you will dwell in the land forever.
28 For the LORD loves the just
and will not forsake his faithful ones. – Psalm 37

vacation to anywhere?

This week I’ve been in Greenville, SC on business. As we start training programs with people we don’t know, we normally introduce ourselves (briefly), but this sometimes can get boring. So, in order to spice it up, we answer unique questions like: what was your most embarassing moment, who did you have a crush on when you were little, etc….  This week our question was “If you could go ANYWHERE on vacation, where would it be?” Take a moment – and think about where you might go….

Remember, the question is if you could go ANYWHERE. So we all started thinking about where that would be….

Even in our small class, one person mentioned Australia. Another mentioned the outer space program (it currently costs a mere $250K for one person). One individual lovingly said “anywhere my wife wants to.”  I thought this was nice, and I had already been prepared to say Europe, because Kimberly and I have both wanted to go there for years. But then, it occurred to me, somewhere nicer….

(Have you decided where YOU would go yet?)  When it got to me, I answered “Heaven!” I think I shocked many, and some said “just on vacation” which of course led me to be able to witness a little more to the entire class. Don’t get me wrong – I didn’t get up and “preach,” but I did get the brief opportunity to share my faith.

Because of that, at our lunchtime yesterday, I was invited to say Grace for the table prior to the meal. I never expected that such a quick witness would influence people so much. But…

All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness – 2 Tim 3:16

Even a small snipet about our faith can help others open up and share their faith, and help others remember that we need to keep Christ in the forefront of our minds. For others, it helps them come to know Jesus because

“he [Jesus] is able to save completely those who come to God through him, because he always lives to intercede for them.” – Hebrews 7:25
