on healing…

Well, yesterday was a healing day for me. It was the first day I’ve missed church for a sickness in years. What happened…

Saturday night, after a great afternoon at the river with the youth (BTW – thanks to ALL the adults who contributed to our party), I returned home and quickly became ill and developed a fever that put me in bed for about 14 hours. I was freezing cold and sweating at the same time. Kimberly took care of me while I stayed exhausted and cold/hot. The neat thing, however, is that God does heal us. While I had to remain home from church so that I wouldn’t infect anyone else, God used that day to help provide me with much needed rest for my body, mind, and spirit.

Today I feel much better. Although I’m still not 100%, I’m ready to get moving again.

The Bible tells us that even 2000 years ago people had diseases and sicknesses. Back then they didn’t have a quarter of probably 1/10th of the medicines we have today. However, they DID have JESUS!

Jesus went throughout Galilee, teaching in their synagogues, proclaiming the good news of the kingdom, and healing every disease and sickness among the people. – Matthew 4:23

We may think in this modern world that the medicines are what is making us better. Sure they do help, but just think for a second: Where did the medicine come from? Who invented it? How did it come to be?

God will meet all your needs. – Philippians 4:19

It is God who provides for our needs, and supplies HIS grace and mercy upon us, every day of our life. Thanks be to God who brings us through in our times of weakness and dismay.

Every wonder where God is?

“Fear not, for I am with you” – Isaiah 41:10

If that’s not enough for you, the verse continues…

“Be not dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you, Yes, I will help you, I will uphold you with My righteous right hand.’” Isaiah 41:10 

I think that pretty much covers it! In times of trouble, in times of joy, God is right here with us, holding us in His hand!

nothing is too hard for the Lord

Today, as I prayed for something to blog about, a recurring theme hit me:

Nothing is too hard for [the Lord].

I can’t tell you why this hit me, maybe I needed to hear it. Maybe you needed to hear it. Regardless, it is our responsibility to study and grow our knowledge. As we study through the Bible, this theme is steady and constant. In Jeremiah, we find the words:

17 “Ah, Sovereign LORD, you have made the heavens and the earth by your great power and outstretched arm. Nothing is too hard for you.

and again…

26 Then the word of the LORD came to Jeremiah: 27 “I am the LORD, the God of all mankind. Is anything too hard for me? (obviously- that was a rhetorical question)

But is it really mentioned elsewhere?

14 Is anything too hard for the LORD? I will return to you at the appointed time next year, and Sarah will have a son. Genesis 18:14 (again, rhetorical question)

So many times, repeatedly in the Bible, a person, usually a faithful devoted one would challenge God, or His messenger concerning what they had been told. I think of Mary asking the angel Gabriel about her divine pregnancy: (from Luke 1:34) “How will this be,” Mary asked the angel, “since I am a virgin?” Over and over, faithful ones challenged or at the least questioned God’s direction or ability. Yet, over and OVER again, He proved His divine authority. You see, it is God that is in control over all.

Some days, especially when we think we are controlling our lives, we begin to challenge God’s direction, His Will, or His ability to help us make it through. However, He has proven time and time again…, not only can He do it, but His plan and His ways are far superior to anything we could imagine.

Therefore, today as you ponder, “how?” – how is it possible, or “why?” – why is this happening to me? – simply trust the Lord - Nothing is too hard for the Lord!

the truth: Was America founded with or without God?

OK, sometimes I get really upset when certain anti-religious groups try to claim that our Founding Fathers didn’t believe in God and that ”there is no mention of God in our constitution.” First of all, there are several phrases that specifically mention religion and the absence of the Federal Government to require any religious affiliation (remember, this was one of our founding beliefs- “Freedom of Religion” (Amendment #1) ”Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof“). However, the absence of a declaration of God does NOT declare that our founding fathers were atheists. As a matter of fact, many if not all were members of a specific denomination, with about 90% being Episcopalian/Anglican, Presbyterian, or Congregationalist in their religious belief (this list is comprised of members from the writers of the Constitution, Declaration of Independence, and Articles of Confederation. Oh, and by the way, the signatory section of the Constitution does indeed reference, and I quote:

<signed> done in Convention by the Unanimous Consent of the States present the Seventeenth Day of September in the Year of our Lord one thousand seven hundred and Eighty seven

Furthermore, our State Constitutions, which serve to support and clarify our Federal laws, have an overwhelming majority which specifically reference a divine power, specifically God, Our Lord, etc:

We, the people of the State of Alabama, in order to establish justice, … invoking the favor and guidance of Almighty God,

We the people of Alaska, grateful to God

We, the people of the State of Arizona, grateful to Almighty God

We, the People of the State of Arkansas, grateful to Almighty God

…need I go on…???

and not to mention the Declaration of Independence:

WHEN in the course of human events, it becomes necessary
for one people to dissolve the political bands which have connected them with another, and to assume among the powers of the earth, the separate and equal station to which the laws of nature and of nature’s God entitle them…

We hold these truths to be self-evident: That all men are
created equal; that they are endowed by their Creator

…We, therefore, the representatives of the United States

Further evidence exists concerning our national founding such as the appointment of Chaplains to Congress, the use of Bible as the primary reading instrument in educational institutions, and the fact that many signers of our original documents received Biblical educational degrees.

Today, as we celebrate the 4th of July, don’t let the misleading rumors of our Founding Father’s dispute what youknow in your heart is true. We are, were, and always will be a Christian nation, so long as WE THE PEOPLE continue to speak out for OUR LORD!

three wise firefighters

In a small Southern town there was a “Nativity Scene” that showed great skill and talent had gone into creating it. One small feature bothered me. The three wise men were wearing firemen’s helmets. Totally unable to come up with a reason or explanation, I left.

At a “Quik Stop” on the edge of town, I asked the lady behind the counter about the helmets. She exploded into a rage, yelling at me, “You darn Yankees never do read the Bible!” I assured her that I did, but simply couldn’t recall anything about firemen in the Bible.

She jerked her Bible from behind the counter and ruffled thru some pages, and finally jabbed her finger at a passage. Sticking it in my face she said “See, it says right here, ‘The three wise man came from afar.’”

On Witnessing…

Often in church you’ll hear Pastors, Youth Pastors, Evangelists, and others speak about witnessing. They’ll preach ”Go, tell others about God.” They are correct in quoting the Great Commission Matthew 28:19 which reads:

Therefore go and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,

However, we, the religious ‘leaders,’ often forget to explain “why” it is important. Sure, there is no doubt that Scripture and Jesus teaches us to go witness. The Bible clearly tells us that it is important. But why is it important?

Shortly after the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus gave us the answer:  

Matthew 9:35-36  And Jesus went about all the cities and villages, teaching in their synagogues, and preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing every sickness and every disease among the people. 
But seeing the crowds, He was moved with compassion on them, because they were tired and scattered like sheep having no shepherd.

Jesus was explaining that many people will believe. Once we get people out there telling others, people are going to follow. However, we need leaders who will continue to develop others and step up and “shepherd” the flock. We need people not only to witness, but to lead. The trailing edge of the Great Commission reads:  

Matthew 28:20  teaching them to observe all things, whatever I commanded you.

Here we find that teachers or leaders are also a necessary part of God’s growing Kingdom.

Matthew 9:37-38  Then [Jesus] said to His disciples, The harvest truly is plenteous, but the laborers are few. 
Therefore pray to the Lord of the harvest that He will send out laborers into His harvest.

I ask that each of us pray today to find out if God wants us to be one of those leaders, who He’ll send out to shepherd His flock.

Communication…

Communication? A long word to describe what should be a simple concept, but it is quite hard at times. Have you ever mis-communicated to someone? Text messaging and e-mails are probably the worst forms of communication, because the receiving person can’t interpret your body language. Take for example “I HAVE TO STUDY TONIGHT.” Does that statement imply that you “need” to study because of academic requirements, or because your parents are making you study? Does it imply that you desire to study to do better, or that you’re doing it against your desires because you must do it. Does it imply that you’re SCREAMING at the person because you’re using all CAPS, or was the writer just too lazy to change to small case?  Communication is more than words though.

Studies show that only 7% of communication is through words. Another 55% is visual (body language, eye contact), and another 38% is vocal (pitch, speed, tone, etc).  Interestingly enough, even face to face communication can be quite difficult. 

As perfect as He was, Jesus even found difficulty in communicating His mission and methods while on earth, and around people he dealt with every day:

Matthew 9:2-8  And behold, they brought to Him a paralytic, lying on a bed. And Jesus, seeing their faith, said to the paralytic, Child, be of good cheer. Your sins are forgiven you.

And lo, some of the scribes said within themselves, This one blasphemes.  And Jesus, knowing their thoughts, said, Why do you think evil in your hearts? For which is easier? To say, Your sins are forgiven you, or to say, Arise and walk!

But so that you may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins, then He said to the paralytic, Arise, take up your bed and go to your house.  And he arose and departed to his house. But when the crowds saw, they marveled and glorified God, who had given such authority to men.

Jesus tried to explain to the scribes and people that forgiveness of sins is much more valuable than walking, but they didn’t understand. However, in order to counter their remarks, He replied appropriately stating “Arise, take up your bed” – WALK!

In responding to them, Jesus communicated that He had the authority to do anything. God’s Word communicates over and over again the truths that we need to know in order to live a life that leads to Heaven. Yet, every day people ignore it. Why? Because every day WE fail to communicate it!

Tell someone today about God’s love. It will bring a blessing to your life and theirs!

on NOT going to church

A mother went to wake her son for church one Sunday morning. When she knocked on his door, he said, “I’m not going!”

“Why not?” asked his mother.

“I’ll give you two good reasons,” he said. “One, they don’t like me. Two, I don’t like them.”

His mother replied, “I’ll give you two good reasons why YOU WILL go to church. One, you’re 47 years old. Two, you’re the pastor!”

did you hear what he did?

Based on what I read on Facebook and see in the news, there is so much hostility in this world. People get angry at others based on the silliest things. …  Granted, there are many things going on that people are doing that appear stupid and insane, but still we must remember that God did not give us the responsibility to judge others, or a commandment to get angry at those who hurt us:

if you forgive other people when they sin against you, your heavenly Father will also forgive you.  But if you do not forgive others their sins, your Father will not forgive your sins. – Matthew 6:14-15

I think if we all back up, we will realize that we are all guilty of doing some things we shouldn’t have. Yes, some are worse than others, but we are all guilty of being wrong on occassion (yes, even me :-)

I believe we must overcome this, however, forgive those who hurt us. After all, we too are sinners and have sinned against God. We must forgive others as God forgave us.

Help us, God our Savior, for the glory of your name; deliver us and forgive our sins for your name’s sake.
Psalm 79:9
