Paul writes to the Romans in chapter 1:
Let me say first that I thank my God through Jesus Christ for all of you, because your faith in him is being talked about all over the world. God knows how often I pray for you. Day and night I bring you and your needs in prayer to God, whom I serve with all my heart by spreading the Good News about his Son. One of the things I always pray for is the opportunity, God willing, to come at last to see you. For I long to visit you so I can bring you some spiritual gift that will help you grow strong in the Lord. When we get together, I want to encourage you in your faith, but I also want to be encouraged by yours. – Romans 1:8-12
What a way to start a letter! Paul says he thanks GOD for their faith. And what about their faith? It’s so huge that it’s being talked about “all over the world.” That, by itself, could be a great sermon. How great is thy faithfulness (except talking about the human side). I would love to get a letter saying someone thanks God because of me. Wouldn’t you?
Yet Paul continues to let them know that he prays for them. Wow, they are yet another recipient of good things! Prayers (even without the request) are being poured out on them day and night.
Finally, Paul mentions that he wants to bring the Romans a gift. What kind of gift? A spiritual gift. And here’s the interesting part, Paul says, “I want to encourage you in your faith, but I also want to be encouraged by yours.”
Do you hear what I hear? Paul, one of the greatest, if not THE greatest apostle mentions that he too, desires encouragement. It doesn’t matter what position we hold in church or ministry. We ALL need encouragement. So when you see a fellow Christian that is depressed or down, take time to encourage them. Let them know how much the Lord loves them!
Christians should understand the unfailing and enduring love that God shows us, but that doesn’t stop us from needing encouragement. Paul reminds us that encouragement goes both ways. Not just from leadership down, but also up and sideways.
Do you hear what I hear Paul say? Lift up your brother or sister in Christ today. Let them know that you care ,and so does God. Encourage each other.
Therefore encourage each other with these words. – 1 Thessalonians 4:18
Thank you for reminding us that all christians need encouragement at times. Tomorrow (Sunday) I will tell my pastor how much his faithfulness to the Lord and to the church congregation is appreciated.
